2025 Of Color And Ink - Documentary of Chang Dai-chien
On January 18, 2025, on the eve of Dahan, the SDCACS held the premiere of a documentary film entitled "Of Color And Ink" - to discover the secret paradise of Chang Dai-chien.
The event kicked off with a captivating performance by Asayake Taiko, the taiko drumming group from UC San Diego. Their name means "dawn" in Japanese, and through their energetic drumming, they brought the spirit of La Jolla's sea mist to life. Their performance included the innovative slant-drumming piece "Jack Bazaar," composed by Kristofer Bergstrom, known for his groundbreaking choreography. They also performed "Asayake," a piece highlighting the unique sounds of the uchiwa-daiko and bamboo flute, gifted by Lucas Muraguchi from Brazil’s Ishin Daiko. Additionally, they played "Dokokara," a community piece from Los Angeles Taiko Institute, originally commissioned and performed by Zenshin Daiko from Maui, showcasing challenging and dynamic rhythms.
We were also treated to a heartwarming performance by Formosa Chamber Music Ensemble, a non-profit organization founded by a group of Taiwanese families living in San Diego in 2018. United by a common passion for music education and cultural heritage, they believe in music's power to inspire and comfort. Their performance included Vivaldi’s "The Four Seasons – Winter," capturing the serene beauty of winter by the fireside. They also played the cheerful 1939 piece "Spring Scenery All Around," and the "Spring Festival Overture," depicting festive scenes of the Lunar New Year. The lively "Lanyang Dance," adapted from a Taiwanese nursery rhyme, and the smooth piano trio "Peach Blossom in Full Bloom," demonstrated the ensemble’s dedication to sharing love, hope, and enthusiasm through music.
The highlight of the event was "Of Color And Ink - A Thousand Miles in Search of Chang Dai-chien," directed by Professor Zhang Weimin from the San Francisco State University Film Department. The film, a visually stunning documentary 12 years in the making and shot across 25 locations, reveals a lost chapter in world art history through breathtaking visuals and in-depth storytelling. It delves into the life and legacy of Zhang Daqian, known as "China’s Picasso," going beyond rumors and myths to depict his pursuit of art, the ideal of "Peach Blossom Spring," and his everlasting longing for his homeland as an overseas artist. No film before this has so authentically presented Zhang Daqian's life abroad, capturing his journey from Argentina to Brazil, from Paris to California. The film ends with Chang Dai-chien’s motto: "Do not fail the ancients to tell future generations, directly creating places that the ancients never reached," inspiring future generations to continue striving forward.
The film deeply moved all the audience. After the film ended, attendees had the opportunity to interact with Director Zhang and learn about his filmmaking journey. The event concluded successfully with photo sessions and autographs from the director.
