San Diego Chinese Art and Cultural Society Illuminates the Community with Spectacular 2026 Lantern Festival

SAN DIEGO, CA — On Saturday, March 7, 2026, the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum was transformed into a glowing sanctuary of art and tradition as the San Diego Chinese Art and Cultural Society (SDCACS) hosted its "Light Up the New Year" Lantern Festival. The event saw a massive turnout, with the museum courtyard filled to capacity with visitors eager to celebrate the end of the Lunar New Year season.

The highlight of the evening was a breathtaking display of over 150 DIY lanterns, featuring original artwork from both professional artists and local students. These lanterns, which served as the centerpiece of the "Lantern Alley," showcased the immense creative talent within the San Diego community.

The festival offered a fully immersive cultural experience. We have captivating performances by the UCSD Five Millennia Orchestra. They enchanted the crowd with traditional melodies, while the BAModel Academy provided a high-energy showcase that moved dynamically through the courtyard. In a gesture of community warmth, SDCACS volunteers served approximately 400 cups of "YuanXiao" (traditional sweet glutinous rice balls), a traditional treat representing family unity and togetherness.

The event culminated in a Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 PM, featuring Guests of Honor Dr. Lilly Cheng and Dr. Robert Stein from the SDCHM, alongside SDCACS board members. As the sun set, the ceremonial lighting of the courtyard symbolized a bright start to the Year of the Horse.

"Since our establishment in 1991, our mission has been to enrich San Diego through the beauty of Chinese art and education," said president of SDCACS, Ling Chan. "To see the courtyard so full of life and to share our traditions with so many neighbors is the perfect way to celebrate our 35th year."

In a final gesture of community partnership, the SDCACS donated the decorative outdoor lanterns to the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum to ensure the courtyard remains vibrant for future visitors.
